Episode 6 - AI in Inkjet Printing – Practical Applications and Industry Trends

Host Simon Edwards of GIS is joined by Mike Sales of 42 Technology, Neelima Alluri of Chain of Thought AI, and Dave Erasmus of Copperstone Projects for a conversation on AI in inkjet printing that ranges far beyond the printer itself.

Neelima opens by talking through her work helping industrial print businesses make their scattered knowledge, manuals, support tickets, past cases, actually usable by AI, and the tangible time savings that follow when a support engineer can find an answer in minutes rather than days. Mike brings the engineering side, describing how AI has changed his own work as a software developer and where edge AI, running locally rather than in the cloud, matters for industrial printing applications that need data privacy and can't afford to depend on an external provider. Dave, the self-described outlier of the group, adds a different lens entirely, talking about the risk of becoming cognitively dependent on AI, the value of what he calls turning a business's "gaseous" knowledge, the informal, unrecorded conversations that carry culture and expertise, into something durable and shareable.

The panel also gets into some properly practical territory: a four-stage model of AI adoption from tinkering through to entirely new business models, why image analysis and predictive maintenance are already being used in print production rather than being some future promise, and a candid discussion of where AI probably shouldn't be given autonomy, particularly in industrial environments where the consequences of a wrong decision are real. They close by debating whether AI will prove as fundamental a shift as the printing press itself, and what practical first steps a business or individual should take if they're only just getting started.
