Remembering Anders Nilsson
There are some people in our industry whose impact extends far beyond their business achievements or official titles. Anders Nilsson was one of those people.
Like many in the global print community, we were saddened to learn of the passing of Anders Nilsson, former FESPA President, longstanding Board Member, Asia Ambassador, and owner of Gamleby Screen in Sweden. Anders served as FESPA President from 2007 to 2010 and played an important role in helping shape the organisation during a period of significant international growth and transformation.
For us, this news carries a particularly personal significance.
Between 2007 and 2011, both Frazer Chesterman and I had the privilege of working alongside Anders during our time at FESPA. Those years were exciting, ambitious and, at times, challenging. FESPA was evolving rapidly from a respected federation into a truly global organisation and community. It was expanding its international reach, strengthening its presence in Asia, embracing new technologies, and creating the foundations that continue to support its success today.
Throughout that period, Anders stood out as a leader.
He brought energy, enthusiasm and a genuine sense of purpose to everything he did. He understood that organisations grow through people and relationships as much as they do through strategy. He had a natural ability to connect with individuals from different countries, cultures and backgrounds, helping to create the sense of community that became such a defining characteristic of FESPA.
What we remember most, however, is not a board meeting, an exhibition, or a strategic discussion.
We remember Anders as supportive, approachable and generous with his time. He was affable, dynamic and always willing to encourage those around him. During a period of considerable change and growth, he provided leadership with warmth and humanity. He had a way of making people feel valued and included, qualities that are often overlooked but are fundamental to successful leadership.
Like many professional relationships, our paths eventually diverged. After leaving FESPA, we sadly lost touch with Anders. Yet the memories remain clear. When we look back on those years, Anders is remembered as one of the people who helped make them special - someone who genuinely cared about the industry, about the organisation, and about the people within it.
His contribution to FESPA was significant. His contribution to the wider print community was equally important. But perhaps his greatest legacy lies in the relationships he built and the positive influence he had on those fortunate enough to work alongside him.
As we reflect on his passing, we wanted to take a moment to acknowledge that contribution and pay our personal respects.
Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Anders' family, friends and former colleagues during this difficult time.
Thank you, Anders, for your leadership, your friendship, and your contribution to an industry and community that is better for having had you as part of it.
